Sandra Hüller has become one of the most reliable reasons to watch a European film. After TONI ERDMANN, ANATOMY OF A FALL and THE ZONE OF INTEREST, ROSE gives her one of her most unusual roles yet.

The film is interested in gender and identity, but also in something more basic: what happens when a person who has survived by becoming someone else is suddenly forced to explain who they are.

Set in 17th-century Germany after the Thirty Years’ War, the film follows Rose, who has been living as a man after serving as a soldier. When she arrives in a small Protestant village to claim an inheritance, she tries to build a new life while protecting the identity that has allowed her to survive.

That becomes increasingly difficult when questions of property, marriage and social expectation begin closing in around her.

ROSE is shot in stark black and white, and the photography gives the film a hard, stripped-back beauty. Faces, clothing and landscapes are rendered with extraordinary clarity, while the lack of colour makes its 17th-century world feel colder and less forgiving.

Hüller is the centre of it. Her performance is restrained, watchful and difficult to read, which makes Rose feel like someone constantly calculating how much of herself she can safely reveal.

ROSE has emerged as one of the best-reviewed European films of 2026, and if you’ve followed Hüller’s work over the last few years, this is exactly the kind of performance that shows why she has become such a compelling screen presence.
