MILLENNIUM MAMBO
Hou Hsiao-hsien | 2001 | Taiwan | 1h59m | Mandarin with English subtitles
MILLENNIUM MAMBO opens with Shu Qi walking through a covered pedestrian bridge in slow motion while Lim Giong’s electronic score plays and her older self narrates from ten years in the future. From the beginning, Hou Hsiao-hsien frames the film as a memory of youth while that youth still feels close enough to touch.
Shu Qi plays Vicky, drifting through turn-of-the-millennium Taipei between a possessive boyfriend, Hao-Hao, and an older man, Jack, whose world offers a different kind of escape. Vicky works in bars, moves through clubs, returns to cramped apartments and keeps trying to pull away from a life that repeatedly draws her back in.
Hou had already built his reputation on films about Taiwanese history, family and memory, so this turn toward club culture, electronic music and contemporary youth surprised audiences when the film premiered at Cannes. Rather than explaining Vicky through psychology or plot, he stays close to the places, habits and relationships that make up her daily life.
Mark Lee Ping-bin’s cinematography gives the film much of its power. Blue, green and violet light spills across nightclubs, corridors, apartments and city streets. Faces drift in and out of focus. Smoke and reflected light soften the edges of rooms. Taipei becomes less a backdrop than the environment through which Vicky experiences boredom, desire and the feeling of being stuck.
The film also captures a specific moment in urban Taiwanese youth culture, from techno clubs and recreational drugs to bar work and late-night wandering. More than twenty years later, those details give MILLENNIUM MAMBO the feeling of a time capsule, but one filtered through memory rather than documentary realism.
Its reputation has grown considerably since its release. What once seemed loose or elusive now feels central to what the film is doing. Vicky is remembering a period of her life before she fully understood what it meant, and Hou builds the film around that distance between living through something and only later recognising what it was.
ABOUT ASIAN FILM WEEK
Asian Film Week is exactly the kind of programming FOMO exists for: major classics, cult discoveries and films you rarely get the chance to see on a cinema screen in Tbilisi. This week has been curated with Denis from Ukraine, a FOMO Film Club lifetime member with a real passion for Asian cinema, whose recommendations helped fill some gaps in my own knowledge and pushed the programme in directions I might not have reached alone.
A lot of care has gone into making the week feel broad, balanced and genuinely worth exploring. You’ll find landmark films from directors already well known in the West alongside stranger, more underground work that deserves a much wider audience. If Asian cinema is already your thing, I hope there are still a few surprises here. If it isn’t, I hope this week gives you a great place to start.
