INSTANT SWAMP

Satoshi Miki | 2009 | Japan | 2h0m | Japanese with English subtitles

INSTANT SWAMP begins with Haname Jinchoge watching her life fall apart in increasingly ridiculous ways. The magazine she works for folds, her mother ends up in a coma after going in search of a kappa, a mischievous water creature from Japanese folklore, and Haname discovers that the man she thought was her father may not be her father at all.

That discovery leads her to an eccentric junk dealer called Light Bulb, and from there the film keeps piling absurdity onto ordinary adult frustration. Director Satoshi Miki treats bizarre events with a completely straight face, which is where much of the comedy comes from. The stranger Haname’s circumstances become, the more practical and irritated her response tends to be.

Kumiko Asō is the film’s anchor. Haname has to navigate unemployment, family secrets, romantic disappointment and a growing collection of oddballs without ever becoming merely the sane person surrounded by lunatics. Her own frustrations and stubbornness are part of the joke.

Miki came from television comedy and variety programming, and INSTANT SWAMP carries that rhythm into feature filmmaking. Visual gags, strange side characters and sudden digressions interrupt the story constantly, but underneath the comedy is a more recognisable anxiety about adulthood: how much of your parents you inherit, how little say you sometimes have over the life you planned, and how quickly certainty can disappear.

Haname spends much of the film trying to distance herself from the mess of her family, her past and the people she thinks she has outgrown. What she gradually discovers is that becoming an adult is less about escaping where you came from and more about deciding what parts of it you are willing to carry with you.

ABOUT ASIAN FILM WEEK

Asian Film Week is exactly the kind of programming FOMO exists for: major classics, cult discoveries and films you rarely get the chance to see on a cinema screen in Tbilisi. This week has been curated with Denis from Ukraine, a FOMO Film Club lifetime member with a real passion for Asian cinema, whose recommendations helped fill some gaps in my own knowledge and pushed the programme in directions I might not have reached alone.

A lot of care has gone into making the week feel broad, balanced and genuinely worth exploring. You’ll find landmark films from directors already well known in the West alongside stranger, more underground work that deserves a much wider audience. If Asian cinema is already your thing, I hope there are still a few surprises here. If it isn’t, I hope this week gives you a great place to start.
